To me, the best way to take advantage of the free backlinks you receive from submitting articles is to create pages based on long-tail keywords (for example instead of "widgets" make a page named "blue widgets online". And put a link to the pages you create at the bottom of the article. Since the amount of competition for long tails is not that bad, you could easily rank for them by using this method.
